Two days ago, it was announced that Toronto Blue Jay's legendary shortstop, Tony Fernandez had passed away of kidney disease at 57.
For longtime Blue Jays fans such as me were sadden to hear the terrible news, even though, he was ill for weeks.
You see, Tony was a childhood hero of mine.
I loved the way he whipped the ball to first base with his famous side arm throw, barely making an error.
It is no surprise that the five-time All-Star won four Gold Glove awards in his 17 year career.
Octavio Antonio Fernandez Castro was born on June 30, 1962 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic.
Besides the Blue Jays, Tony played for several Major League teams, including the San Diego Padres and New York Mets.
Tony retired in 2001 after a year with the Milwaukee Brewers.
He finished his career with a .288 batting average, 2276 hits, 94 home runs, 844 RBIs, 414 doubles, 92 triples and 246 stolen bases.
Tony holds the Blue Jay's franchise record for triples.
Tony won a World Series title with the Jays in 1993.
R.I.P. Tony.
You'll be sadly missed.
