Grubauer, however, put a wall in front off him.
Joonas Donskoi sealed the deal for the Avalanche with an empty netter at 18:41.
Despite the loss, Leaf's head coach, Sheldon Keefe, was pleased with his team's performance.
"I thought we stayed in the game all the way through," said Keefe.
McKinnon had a two point night.
Toronto is off for two days before heading top St. Louis on Saturday to take on the Blues.
